The event's chief executive, Roger Clark, says about 35,000 usually attend the event on Easter Saturday.

However fine weather brought more people than usual and he estimates more than 45,000 people turned out.

Organisers estimated that more than 40,000 attended the event on Sunday.

This year, the biennial event has one of the biggest collections of World War II era combat aircraft ever seen in New Zealand.

The Royal New Zealand Airforce celebrated its 75th anniversary with a display by the Red Checkers aerobatic team on Saturday.

However, Mr Clark says Sunday's display by the Red Checkers had to be cancelled at the last minute, due to illness.

Air New Zealand's all black Boeing 777 jet was showcased with a flypast on Sunday.
