A 20-year-old man accused of stabbing a 95-year-old man in the head has been remanded in custody.
The man, who has been granted interim name suppression, was arrested shortly after the stabbing in the West Auckland suburb of Glendene about 9.30pm on Wednesday.
St John Ambulance says the 95-year-old, who was at home at the time, contacted emergency services by activating a personal alarm and telling them he had severe bleeding. He has undergone surgery and is in a stable condition on Thursday.
Dressed in a police boiler suit when he appeared in Waitakere District Court, the accused stood in the dock with his hands behind his head while he heard police were opposing bail. He will reappear on Friday.

A neighbour of the victim who has known him for 25 years, says the incident is a sad indictment of society.
Tony Compain says the man is a "very independent sort of a guy" who is still driving but is very frail.
"Why would anyone even think of putting a hand on him?"
Mr Compain says if anyone wanted to rob the man, they could have run away from him.
