A boy racer who killed a motorist while drag-racing in Auckland has been sentenced to six months in a youth justice facility and disqualified from driving for two and a half years.

The 16-year-old, who can not be named because of his age, killed Sean FitzPatrick and injured another person in a head-on collision in the suburb of Mt Wellington in January.

He admitted five charges, including reckless driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

The teenager told police he was racing another car at about 160 kilometres an hour when he collided with Mr Fitzpatrick's car at an intersection.

His lawyer told the Auckland Youth Court the 16-year-old had had a life of abuse and neglect and has been in and out of youth justice facilities since he was 12.
