International union votes to support AFFCO workers

8:38 am on 20 May 2012

The International Union of Food Workers has passed a resolution to support the AFFCO workers who have been locked out or on strike.

Up to 900 workers have been locked out of AFFCO's North Island plants since the end of February over a dispute with their collective contract.

New Zealand Council of Trade Unions president Helen Kelly says more than 500 food union delegates voted unanimously to pass a resolution of solidarity and support for the workers.

She says this the second big dispute in the meat industry in the last six months in which employers have locked out workers and such actions risk damaging New Zealand's international reputation.

Ms Kelly says the Australian Council of Trade Unions passed a resolution earlier in the week to support the workers.
