Fire crews have contained a blaze on Port Hills, near Christchurch, despite windy conditions fanning the flames.
The fire in a plantation above Evans Pass Road was spotted about 1.30am on Friday
A Department of Conservation spokesperson said it had been brought under control using a helicopter equipped with a monsoon bucket and night vision.
About 25 firefighters on the ground continued to tackle the fire which burnt about two hectares.
