Wellington appeals for lottery money for quake-proofing

Updated at 2:39 pm on 21 June 2012

Wellington City Council is expecting to spend an extra $25 million in the next decade on earthquake strengthening buildings, in addition to the $50 million already committed.

The council is planning to ask the Lottery Grants Board for money to help with work on Wellington Town Hall and other historic buildings.

Work on Wellington Town Hall alone will cost about $34 million.

The building will be closed for two years from next May, which the council says will cost the Wellington economy $25 million.

The council is considering refurbishing waterfront buildings Shed 6 and TSB Arena as a replacement venue.
