Free afterhours care for children under six

Two district health boards are now offering free doctor visits for children under the age of six, regardless of the time of day.

The Government announced last year free afterhours care for children in that age group.

Capital & Coast DHB, which covers Wellington City, Porirua and the Kapiti Coast, says care will be available through a clinic in each of its three centres.

Southern District Health Board is making free afterhours care available through GP practices.

Porirua GP Larry Jordan says fees for afterhours care could reach more than $40 per child in the past, meaning some illnesses, like respiratory infections, would go untreated and become more serious.
