Heater confirmed as cause of fatal fire

Updated at 10:36 pm on 3 July 2012

A 78-year-old man died after being pulled from a pensioner flat by emergency services on Monday night.

An ambulance crew was unable to resuscitate him.

Fire Safety Officer Kevin Holmes says flammable items were left too close to a gas heater and caught alight.

Mr Holmes says there has been a spike in heater-related fires in Waikato due to colder weather in the past three weeks.
