Woman's body found off Mt Victoria track

10:19 pm on 9 July 2012

Police are investigating the discovery of a woman's body on Mt Victoria in Wellington.

Joggers called police after discovering the body just off a running track in rough terrain between Wellington East Girls' College and Alexandra Park about 11am on Monday.

The parkland area sits above the central city suburb of Mt Victoria.

Police believe the woman was aged in her 40s, but has yet to be identified.

Detective Inspector Paul Basham, who is leading the investigation, says the body had not been there long and it is too early to know if the death is suspicious.

A man was arrested at the scene in the afternoon for attempting to obstruct the investigation by getting too close to the cordon, but has been eliminated from the inquiry.

The body was removed on Monday night and a post-mortem will be carried out on Tuesday.

A team of 20 officers is working on the case.
