Relocating the Sarjeant Gallery collection while earthquake strengthening work is carried out could cost Wanganui District Council millions of dollars.
Mayor Annette Main says council is concerned about the safety of the collection in the building.
Ms Main says the preferred option is to look at temporarily moving the Sarjeant Gallery operation and collection to another location.
She says the move would cost the council an estimated $2.17 million over five years.
That includes the cost of fitting out the new building, moving the collection and operational costs.
The council will discuss its options at a council meeting at the end of the month.
