Dive team searches waterway in cold case killing

12:31 pm on 20 July 2012

A police dive team will search a Rotorua waterway for evidence relating to the fatal shooting of a bank security guard more than 30 years ago.

Howard Percy, who worked at an ANZ bank in Rotorua, was shot twice when he tackled a robber on 5 November 1976. He died on the way to hospital.

Bay of Plenty police and members of Mr Percy's family this week renewed an appeal for information about the case earlier.

The bank, on Old Taupo Road, was robbed in July the same year, during which Mr Percy and two tellers were tied up and about $13,000 in cash stolen.

An investigation into the death was conducted but no one was charged.

A small team of police officers is now looking at the case again and on Friday a dive team was searching a waterway near Sunset Road in Rotorua.

The search being carried out where the road crosses the waterway closest to the Old Taupo Road end of Sunset Road.
