A 29-year-old Whangarei man has been charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found in a stream in the city on Friday morning.
The 21-year-old victim, whose body was found at about 4am in the Waiarohia stream off Tarewa Rd, has not yet been publicly named.
Police in Whangarei say the man will appear in the Whangarei District Court on Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Begbie said earlier that the man was known to the woman and it's likely the two were together on Thursday night.
Police say they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death, but are keen to hear from people who saw or heard anything suspicious around the stream in the early hours of this morning.
Mr Begbie says police don't know at this stage how the woman died, but a post-mortem is being carried out and they expect to name her on Saturday, when all family members have been told of her death.
Distressed whanau members allowed inside the cordon late in the morning spoke to police before the body was removed.
