Electrical storm in capital disrupts flight

10:05 pm on 20 August 2012

An electrical storm sweeping through Wellington on Monday night forced one flight to be turned back to Auckland airport.

The storm scattered large hail stones over the suburbs of Miramar and Strathmore Park just before 9pm, prompting the airport to close its runway so it could be checked for damage.

A spokesperson says flights in and out of Wellington resumed soon after.

Strathmore Park resident Stan Andis says the loud hail storm was intense and lasted about 10 minutes.

Police in Wellington say there have been no reports of damage.
