Engineering firm cutting jobs

Updated at 10:15 am on 24 August 2012

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union says a Whanganui engineering firm is cutting 44 jobs because of difficult economic conditions.

The company, Axiam Metals, makes components for mostly export markets.

The EPMU says the company has suffered from falling sales in recent times.

It says the firm is currently in a consultation process to confirm the extent of the redundancies.

Axiam says some of the redundancies are of temporary positions that are expiring after a big order.
