The lawyers for two men accused of taking part in a home invasion in the Hutt Valley suburb of Silversteam in June last year have told a jury their clients are not guilty.
Jeremy Gorinski, 34, and Dinesh Manoharan, 36, have gone on trial in the Wellington District Court on charges of aggravated robbery.
The Crown says they were part of a group that entered Yvonne and Malcolm Wiffen's home and made off with jewellery and between $50,000 and $80,000 in cash.
However, Mr Gorinski's lawyer, Keith Jeffries, says the Crown case is flawed and suspicion does not equate to proof beyond reasonable doubt.
Mr Manoharan's lawyer, Christopher Stephenson, says his client was not at the Wiffens' home and sees the trial as a chance to clear his name.
Earlier, the court was told that the Wiffens had pillowcases thrown over their heads and were held at gunpoint by men demanding gold, drugs and cash.
Crown prosecutor Sally Carter said after Mrs Wiffen discovered men in her kitchen armed with a sawn-off shotgun she and her husband were tied up before she was taken to the basement and forced to unlock the safe.
Ms Carter says the next day Mr Gorinski and Mr Manoharan were seen in Palmerston North with a large amount of cash, and Mr Gorinski paid cash to buy an Audi.
