A pursuit involving 10 police cars at various times reached speeds of more than 100km/h in the northern suburbs of Christchurch on Wednesday.

The pursuit began in Waikuku, north of the city, and lasted about 20 minutes before the vehicle's driver stopped to avoid running over a set of road spikes.

Police say the 18-year-old was arrested in Culverden earlier over stolen petrol and driving while disqualified.

They say he got back in his car after being processed at the police station because it had not been impounded.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear in court on Thursday on charges including theft, driving while disqualified, failure to stop for police and reckless driving.
