Police are investigating two separate cases of young girls being approached by a man they did not know in an area north of Auckland.

On Wednesday afternoon a nine-year-old girl was offered a lift by a man outside her school in Red Beach, while the next morning two thirteen-year-old girls were approached in the same town by a man in a car.

They all declined the offers and in both cases described the man as in his 40s with wavy hair.

Detective senior sergeant Brett Batty from says they are looking into whether there are any links.

The two cases follow an incident in which a five-year-old-boy was grabbed by a man in the North Shore suburb of Greenhithe on Monday.

He struggled free and ran to his mother.

Police say they are still trying to work out what the man's intentions were but have some positive leads.
