Council unhappy with proposed transport laws

The Wellington Regional Council has told a parliamentary select committee that proposed transport management laws would be a bureaucratic nightmare to implement.

The bill would establish a public transport operating model and allow the Transport Agency to borrow large sums of money for roading projects, subject to the approval of the Transport and Finance ministers.

The regional council's chair told the committee on Thursday the legislation is unnecessarily complex.

Peter Glensor said it would be difficult to implement and extremely onerous on regions that do not already have an extensive public transport network in place.
