Police in Christchurch advise people to watch out for burglars during Show Week.
Last year, weekly car theft numbers were up 35% during Show Week and burglaries were up 20%.
Senior Sergeant Pete Laloli says people tend to be relaxed about security when visiting.
He says motels are often an easy target for thieves who know that doors may be left unlocked for latecomers or windows left wide open on hot nights.
