Top-level managers from New Zealand Post have arrived in Queenstown to try to deal with fallout from the alleged hoarding of tens of thousands of mail items by a postie.
New Zealand Post's national heartland leader, Dean Horsup, has met with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and worried residents of the Fernhill suburb, where most of the mail failed to arrive.
Council communications manager Meaghan Miller says the council told New Zealand Post in June that more than 1000 rates invoices appeared to have vanished.
But she says New Zealand Post fobbed off the misgivings, suggesting it was the council's problem to fix.
She says the council has raised the issue of compensation for residents, some of whom have incurred bad credit ratings because they didn't pay bills on time.
The next appearance in the Queenstown District Court for a postal worker, 32, charged with various theft offences. has been adjourned until 3 December.
