Pair jailed for home invasion robbery

Two men who took part in a home invasion in the Upper Hutt suburb of Silverstream last year have been given lengthy jail sentences.

Jeremy Gorinski, 34, and Dinesh Manoharan, 36, were found guilty of aggravated robbery in October this year.

The men were part of a group who threw pillowcases and blankets over the heads of Yvonne and Malcolm Wiffen, before robbing them of jewellery and up to $90,000 in cash in June 2011.

Judge Bruce Davidson said on Tuesday it was clear that the offending was planned and well organised, and that the victims were severely affected.

He sentenced Manoharan to 11 years' jail, with a minimum non-parole period of five years and six months.

Gorinski was jailed for nine years and nine months for aggravated robbery, and an extra three years and six months for 14 other burglaries.

The couple say they have been left traumatised by their ordeal.

Malcolm Wiffen says his head was covered and hearing his wife pleading with the men not to be shot still haunts him, while Yvonne says they still feel unsafe in their home 18 months on.

"We can't even go out of our back door at night in the dark without thinking is somebody here now. It made us prisoners in our own home - our house is locked 24/7 on a beautiful sunny day."

Mrs Wiffen told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint on Tuesday the couple do not accept Gorinski's apology, as he is not prepared to reveal the names of other people involved in the robbery.
