Updated at 7:19 pm on 11 December 2012

The police in Whanganui have begun an investigation into a fatal house fire in which a mother of three died. The victim was alone at the time.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Maxwell Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

A police spokesperson says the 32-year-old woman is survived by her partner and children, but her name won't be released until family members have been told of her death.

Meanwhile, investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the fire or noticed anything suspicious in the area at the time.
