Police name Israeli killed on Milford road

Updated at 6:21 pm on 7 January 2013

Police have named an Israeli woman who died after the car she was travelling in crashed on the Te Anau to Milford Road on Sunday.

She was 61 year old Irit Wilder, a passenger in the vehicle, in which two others were injured.

Sergeant Tod Hollebon says it's too early to say what caused the crash, or whether charges will be laid.

Te Anau police are calling for rental companies to step up their efforts to make sure foreign travellers are aware of the road rules in New Zealand.

Mr Hollebon says he would like to hear from several people who came across the crash near Knobs Flat and offered assistance, but then left the scene.

The two other people in the car are still in Southland Hospital, in a satisfactory condition.

The car has been taken to Invercargill and will be inspected as part of the police investigation.
