Fisherman dies at Motu River mouth

10:10 pm on 7 January 2013

Searchers have found the body of a fisherman who was swept down the Motu River near Whakatane on Monday.

Police say the man's body was found about 8.30pm on Monday, just 150 metres from where he had gone missing.

The man lived in the area.

Police say the 41 year old man was with a group of friends on Monday afternoon when he was swept away.

Air and sea searches were carried out soon afterwards.

Police say a combination of rain and tropical weather means river levels and the sea surf are dangerously high.

They say people enjoying activities on New Zealand waterways should take every precaution and make sure they are wearing life jackets.
