Crews battle large scrub fire in Southland

10:10 pm on 1 February 2013

The Southern Rural Fire Service says staff will be at the scene of a scrub fire in Castle Downs overnight.

Firefighters were called to the blaze near Mossburn, about 80km north of Invercargill, just after 4.10pm on Friday.

Six helicopters and 70 fire staff were at the scene late on Friday night and five diggers were used to stop the flames reaching a commercial pine forest.

The Rural Fire Service said wind speeds in the area had dropped, but some crew members will remain at the scene in case that changes.
