Two new wharves costing more than $5 million have been opened in Auckland for a new ferry service due to begin on Monday.

The ferry will provide mainly peak-hour commuting services to Hobsonville Point and Beach Haven, in a new venture funded by Auckland Transport.

Both communities have existing bus services but Mayor Len Brown says he is sure the appeal of ferries will draw enough new passengers.

The new services will be among the more expensive in Auckland, with Hobsonville commuters paying between $9 and $12 a journey.
