Council has a month to stop wastewater smell

Wanganui District Council has been given up to four more weeks to stop a foul odour coming from its wastewater plant.

Foul smells have plagued the treatment plant since before Christmas last year, when larger than usual amounts of trade waste entered it.

In January, Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council warned the district council that if the if odour did not stop it would seek the enforcement order.

The regional council says it is now doing so, but if the district council succeeds in limiting the odour to within the plant's boundaries before the Environment Court processes the order, which could be three to four weeks, it will be dropped.

Wanganui District Council staff on Thursday dumped 20 tonnes of lime on the treatment ponds which the council hopes will reduce gases causing the odour to escape into the air.
