Mayor, minister still not one on Auckland housing

8:45 pm on 25 March 2013

Auckland mayor Len Brown and Housing Minister Nick Smith have emerged from a private meeting without reaching agreement on how the supply of housing land will be managed.

The meeting, scheduled for two hours, was over in one, and a 20-minute impromptu media conference left more questions than answers.

The Government and council will set up a joint working party to look at broader housing supply issues in Auckland, over the next six to nine weeks.

But the two remain at odds over when the city's 30-year Unitary Plan can take effect.

Dr Smith says the Government is sticking to its view that the Unitary Plan - which includes new land for 90,000 homes - must go through a three-to-four year appeal period.

The council will continue to push for the plan to come into effect in September.

Dr Smith would not be drawn after the meeting on whether he may still intervene to speed up the supply of land for housing in Auckland.
