Auckland's new cruise ship terminal will be home to the country's largest solar power project.

Two hundred and forty panels are being installed on the roof of Shed 10 on Queen's Wharf and work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Last year, Auckland Council began a redevelopment project costing $14.5 million to turn the shed into a terminal and events centre capable of holding 3,000 people.

Auckland mayor Len Brown says the terminal will be fully sustainable.

He says as electricity prices rise, the city needs to look to more sustainable energy.

"Our aspiration is to be a real eco-city and we have made some good steps in that over the 20 to 30 years and this is an indication of our commitment."
