A tree disease has infected kauri close to Tane Mahuta, in the Waipoua Forest.
The Department of Conservation, Auckland Council and councils in Northland and Bay of Plenty are working to control the spread of kauri dieback.
Government funding for research into the disease is due to end in the middle of next year.
The disease has been found throughout Auckland and in Northland.
Auckland Council parks, recreation heritage forum chair Sandra Coney said the disease has reached trees 60 metres away from Tane Mahuta, the largest tree in New Zealand.
She is pressing the Government to commit $5 million to continue research into kauri dieback.
