A man accused of kidnapping a woman who was dragged behind a car has been remanded in custody.

Sonny Waiti, 26, appeared in the Rotorua District Court on Monday charged with unlawfully detaining Ana Eriepa without her consent with intent to cause her to be confined.

The court heard the 37-year-old mother suffered multiple fractures and severe grazing to her body after being dragged behind the car on Sate Highway 1, north of Tokoroa, for almost 2km on Saturday.

An application by Mr Waiti's lawyer for interim name suppression was refused by Judge James Weir, who remanded the accused in custody until 10 June.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said Ms Eriepa has multiple fractures and severe grazing to her body and is in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital.
