Taranaki hospital upgrade almost complete

6:05 pm on 10 June 2013

The first stage of an $80 million upgrade to the Taranaki Base Hospital is almost complete.

About 2000 people went along to an open day of six new operating theatres, and childrens and orthopaedic wards, during the weekend.

The new building remains empty, but equipment and furniture will be transferred from the old wards the next few weeks.

Project manager Steve Berendsen said the redevelopment was long overdue and it will make the hospital much more efficient and comfortable.

Staff and patients will be in the new building from July. Another ward block will be demolished in the final stage of the upgrade, which is expected to be finished by March 2014.
