Hutt Hospital could have its training accreditation for anaesthetists withdrawn after it failed to meet minimum standards in several areas.
The hospital had a routine audit by the College of Anaesthetists in September and has been given a deadline of December to sort the problems out.
Geoff Long of the New Zealand, Australia College of Anaesthetists says the issues are with the preparation of registrars at the hospital.
Dr Long says the problem is not with the quality of teaching, but the time available for teaching is below standard.
Hutt Valley District Health Board says it has put in place steps to address the key concerns, including aligning its registrar orientation programme with that of Capital and Coast DHB.
