5:02 pm on 29 June 2013

A pilot has escaped shaken but unhurt after his skydiving plane crashed into a quarry, short of a runway, north of Auckland.

The Cessna 182 came to rest in a quarry by Parakai airstrip near Helensville, about 12.30pm on Saturday.

The pilot had just dropped two skydivers and was returning to Parakai airstrip near Helensville.

He was the only person on the plane, which was badly damaged.

An employee of the company that owned the plane, Blueskies Skydiving, said the incident was a blow and the company does not yet know what caused the crash although the pilot did put out a mayday call.
