Police say items may have been taken from a Canterbury house, which was severely damaged in a fire.
Emergency services were called to the house in Hinds, near Ashburton, at half past 11.30pm on Saturday.
No one was home when the fire started.
The blaze has caused extensive damage to the building.
Police say an examination of the property on Sunday showed some items may be missing, but investigations are continuing.
