No early return of rural power supply expected

12:32 pm on 31 July 2008

Many rural parts of Horowhenua are still without power after winds of up to 120km an hour brought down power lines on Wednesday.

Dairy farmers have been without power to milk their cows since Wednesday morning.

Affected areas include Ohau, Manakau, Waikawa, Opiki, Tokomaru, and parts of Foxton and Shannon.

The Horowhenua District Council is warning rural areas may not have power for another couple of days and urges farmers who have problems with milk supply to call Fonterra.

At least five country schools are closed again because of the power cut.

The wind has now been replaced by steady rain. If the level of the Manawatu River continues to rise, Horowhenua District Council says the floodgates may need to be opened to stop it bursting its banks.
