Waikato Treaty deal to be signed on Friday

3:29 pm on 20 August 2008

The Crown and Waikato-Tainui will sign a Treaty of Waitangi settlement covering the Waikato River on Friday.

The signing will take place during the culmination of celebrations to mark the second anniversary of the coronation of the Maori King at Turangawaewae marae in Ngaruawahia.

King Tuheitia succeded his mother, Dame Atairangikaahu, who died in August 2006.

A draft agreement to settle the outstanding claim over the Waikato River was signed in December.

The final agreement will reflect the intention of the iwi and Crown to co-manage the river. Particular emphasis is likely to be put on restoring and protecting the river for future generations.
