Speed limit cut proposal draws 12 submissions

A proposal to lower the speed limit outside Mt Maunganui College, where a student was killed by a logging truck, has attracted 12 submissions.

Four are from statutory bodies required to submit. Among them, Land Transport and police oppose cutting the speed limit from 70 kilometres an hour because of the width of Maunganui Road.

Seven submissions supported a speed reduction, with some suggesting 60km/h rather than 50km/h.

Others proposed engineering methods to reduce speed or suggested that pupils should be dropped off on side streets.

Tauranga City Council will discuss a report later this month.

Breeze Brunton, 13, was killed in June after stepping into the path of a laden log truck as she went to cross the road.
