Candidate proposes asset sales to finance rail loop

The restaurateur running for Auckland's mayoralty says the city should sell assets to pay for a city rail loop.

Former New Yorker John Palino, who has been lived in New Zealand for 17 years, is the only centre-right mayoral candidate at present.

Mr Palino told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme the proposed city rail loop needs to be expanded to take in popular areas such as the Wynyard Quarter and the university as the current route is too limited.

He suggests to help fund the project the council could look at selling its shares in the port, as it is not making the city much money at the moment.
