A woman was trapped in her car after a multiple nose to tail crash on the Napier Hastings expressway on Tuesday evening.
St Johns Ambulance said two cars stopped to help a car which had broken down on the Ngaruroro river bridge on State Highway 50a at 9.30pm, when a fourth vehicle hit all three vehicles at speed.
Emergency services worked for half an hour to free the woman.
Two people were taken to hospital, one with minor and one with serious injuries.
Police said the river bridge was closed for two hours.
