Police in Waikato abandoned a pursuit on Saturday morning after a driver rammed their patrol car and drove at speeds of up to 140km per hour.

Two men suspected of committing a burglary at Tairua, were in a stolen car.

Officers spotted the Subaru at Kopu near Thames at 7.50am but it sped away when they tried to get the driver to pull over.

Police said the driver stopped near the town of Turua and reversed into the side of the police car, damaging both vehicles.

Road spikes were later used to try to stop the car, but the driver avoided them and instead drove at high speed into the path of oncoming traffic.
