A young woman has been abducted by a carload of men and sexually assaulted in Waitara in Taranaki.
Detective Sergeant Brent Matuku says the 18-year-old was abducted from Cracroft Street in Waitara by a group of up to five men in a coloured, large four-door station wagon about 3am on Thursday morning.
She was driven to the beach and sexually assaulted in the vehicle.
Afterwards, she escaped and ran to a house where she received help and was driven home.
Mr Matuku says the police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle and also want to speak to the people who assisted her when she escaped.
