Drunk driver caused deaths, coroner rules

9:02 pm on 24 July 2013

A coroner has found three people died when a drunk driver crashed his car while trying to evade police.

Christopher Devonport says Dylan James Kingi, Holly Kay Gunn and Peter John Bunyan all died in the accident in Gisborne on 14 July 2012.

Mr Devonport says the driver, Mr Kingi, had a blood-alcohol level of 210 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood - more than twice the legal limit.

Mr Kingi had four previous convictions for drink-driving and was an unregistered driver at the time of the crash.

The coroner says he was trying to evade a police officer who had signalled to him to stop.

Ms Gunn and Mr Bunyan were passengers in the car at the time.
