Canterbury Uni building evacuated

Thirty-nine people have been evacuated from Canterbury University's forestry building after engineers discovered it doesn't meet the building code.

The university said on Tuesday that blocks A and B can't be occupied because of roof bracing problems and shear wall strengthening requirements.

A spokesperson says the blocks are not considered to be an immediate danger, but a precautionary approach is being taken until the building is brought up to code.

University vice-chancellor Rod Carr says although all major buildings at the campus have been assessed, smaller ones are still being examined by engineers.
