A Hamilton man who fled the country while awaiting sentencing on sex charges has been found in Botswana.

Christopher Crause, 48, was found guilty of a number of charges involving two underage girls in 2009.

After being convicted in March last year, he was granted bail to get his affairs in order before the likelihood of going to prison.

He was due to be sentenced in the Hamilton District Court, but failed to turn up.

Police say he left the country on a false passport and entered South Africa using his legitimate passport.

He has now been found in the capital of Botswana, Gabarone, and police say they are working with Interpol to bring him back to New Zealand as soon as possible.
