An electricity worker has been injured while restoring power to homes in South Canterbury.

The Alpine Energy worker has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital for treatment, but the nature of the injuries has not been released.

Alpine Energy chief executive Andrew Tombs says work on restoring power to about 200 homes in the Rangitata region has been put on hold because of the accident.

He says the company is doing everything it can to support the injured worker, his colleagues and family, and appreciate customers' patience and understanding.
