Searchers on the West Coast have found some of the belongings of a missing Canadian couple but no signs of life.

Connor Hayes, 25, and Joanna Lam, 24, were last seen at Fox Glacier last Tuesday and police believe their rental campervan was swept into the Haast River by a slip on State Highway 6.

Wreckage from the campervan was found in the river this week and a petrol tank believed to be from the vehicle was discovered near the river mouth.

Tracker dogs and a helicopter with heat detecting equipment were used in the search on Thursday.

West Coast area commander, Inspector John Canning, says some clothing and more parts of the campervan were recovered.

Mr Canning says the police will let the current bad weather pass before checking the river again to see if the flooding has washed anything up.

The Transport Agency closed part of the highway last week because of flooding and it was not until staff went to the scene that the slip was noticed.

Mr Canning says it is unlikely Mr Hayes and Miss Lam survived. He says if they are not found after the weekend police will discuss calling off the search with the coroner.

Joanna Lam's brother Jeffrey Lam told Morning Report the family is grateful for the enormous amount of support from New Zealand authorities and through websites such as Twitter.

He says thousands of people internationally are supporting the family.
