Boom times at Rolleston

9:48 am on 2 October 2013

Rolleston's population has nearly trebled in size in the past seven years and is not showing any signs of slowing.

The town, 25km from Christchurch, has a population of about 9000 - up from 3800 in 2006.

Selwyn district mayor Kelvin Coe says Selwyn is the fastest growing district in New Zealand and Rolleston is the main reason for that.

He says the council is dealing with a record number of building consents because of the Christchurch quakes and the influx of rebuild workers.

Mr Coe says there's no sign of any slowdown, with the Faringdon subdivision under construction adding another 1000 houses.

But he says, although it is hard to predict, the boom will probably tail off in a year or so.
