The tarantulas have been in quarantine at the University of Canterbury since the earthquakes in September 2010 and were cleared on Wednesday for returning to the museum.

Natural History curator Cor Vink says he is delighted to have them back at the museum after such a long period of time.

Mr Vink says the spiders' enclosure has been revamped to provide optimum safety and security in an environment that is the closest resemblance to their natural habitats in Mexico and South America.
