Operators of the country's first cannabis museum say nothing illegal will be smoked or sold there.

The museum is opening in Dunedin on Sunday and features multi-media displays and a library of cannabis-related books, including many on health issues.

Its director, Abe Gray, says exhibits will include the history of cannabis activism at Otago University, fake plants, music and traditional ways of smoking the herb.

Mr Gray said police officers have visited the museum at the headquarters of the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party. "They were heartened to see that it is a place for public education, a very legal, safe, legitimate atmosphere," he said.
